The Marriage

"The Marriage" is a dark, dense drama. It is always a great challenge for directors. I remember my earlier and later "Vows", but they did not make such a great impression on me. Today's "The Marriage" by Zawodziński broke and shattered me.

Waldemar Zawodziński, in the double role of director and set designer, gave us a modern, effective and at the same time important and wise "The Marriage" (...). (...) The event in Łódź was "The Marriage" directed by Waldemar Zawodziński at the Teatr im. Jaracz. On a small stage, we saw a performance surprising with the precision of reading the text, acting virtuosity and the level of stage speech unavailable to many of our theaters today. Zawodziński with ruthless consistency showed what is so intriguing in Gombrowicz's text - the mutual creation of people, their obtaining an identity thanks to the spoken words, naming the world and the fact that this world is perhaps only a tiring dream of a sleeping man. The success of "The Marriage" is also a great acting team (...). Zawodziński's play is one of the most interesting staging of Gombrowicz's drama in recent years, a living proof that our theater can afford to speak clearly and meaningfully.
