The Mandala Theater was founded in 1982. by Katarzyna Deszcz and Andrzej Sadowski. The first performance entitled Because under the table that divides us we are not all holding our hands secretly?, conventionally called a mandala, due to its specific structure, based on the cyclicality of repeating elements, gave rise to the name of the group.

In 1987, the team members established their own theatrical research center, where new trends in the art of theater were presented with the participation of Polish and foreign artists. During the 10 years, the theater carried out various kinds of artistic experiments inspired by contemporary trends in the field of theater and dance as well as oriental theater techniques. After the end of the period of experiments and searches, that is, the "mandala period" (1982-92), a decision was made by the members of the ensemble to close the theater in its current form. The Mandala Associations were established in that place. In 1993, the administrative ensemble of the theater and the entire organizational system were changed. The maintenance of a permanent seat and a permanent artistic team were given up. The collaboration with many artists was started. Work within the created association was carried out in several artistic sub-teams (Deszcz / Sadowski & Mandala Kompany, Mala Performance Group, Sadek).

Since 1995, the Mandala Association has started permanent cooperation with the London Scarlet Theater and other London theaters. The Theater and the Mandala Association presented their performances on hundreds of drama stages in 35 countries around the world.

The Mandala Association was dissolved in March 2003.
