The Marriage
Witold Gombrowicz
Teatr Zagłębia, Sosnowiec
"The Marriage" is a story about the prodigal son. Henry's dreamed return home is to bring reconciliation. It is different, however, as the son's return home turns the order in the family upside down. "The Wedding" is an initiation story in which a son dethrones his father to marry himself. It is a story about a change of order, about a change in our habits. This story is a discussion of the modern family model.
Gombrowicz started to create "The Wedding" in Argentina, after many years of not writing in Polish. So he looked at the family (his?) As if in a dream and from a distance. After the difficult process of translating Ferdydurke into Spanish, he did not want to return to prose. He bet on drama. He approached the issue in his own way: "I tried to use my misfortune and approached my anarchy with the cold deliberation of the producer." He intended to create a brilliant work. Or rather: a parody of genius, because: "but by parodying genius, wouldn't it be possible to smuggle a bit of your own genius?"
