Trans-Atlantyk
Teatr Ateneum, Warszawa
Polska, Polsce, Polską, w Polsce, o Polsko ... Poland mentioned in dozens of ways is an obsession of the heroes of Trans-Atlantyk and its author and narrator, WITOLD GOMBROWICZ.
The novel, one of the most famous in our 20th century literature, would not have been written if Gombrowicz (in July 1939) had not boarded the Chrobry ship to Argentina, and having disembarked in Buenos Aires, refused to return to his homeland during the war. He described his adventures of a newly baked immigrant in a book, which to this day is a bone of contention between "true Poles" and those who see no reason to lie only in front of Poland. ? Or maybe we should create a Synczyzna - a Poland of the young future, free from the old sins of Polish Sarmatians? The ship "Polska" in Artur Tyszkiewicz's play has been sailing and standing still for centuries. Our pride and our littleness, tromtadrration and nobility spin him over and over, and we on him until we dizzy.
