The Memoirs of Stefan Czarniecki

Witold Gombrowicz

The Memoirs of Stefan Czarniecki
DESCRIPTION

The theatrical adaptation combining the short stories by Witold Gombrowicz "The Memoirs of Stefan Czarniecki" and "On the Kitchen Stairs" presents the problem of searching for the identity of a man torn by the contradictions of the contemporary world. The scenically attractive and laughable misunderstandings and absurd events in the final conclusions stimulate deep reflection on the process of reaching an independent personality and the pitfalls and temptations that lurk on this path, to which a young man is exposed to no support in the changing and unstable reality of the beginning of the 21st century, which turns out to be surprisingly identical to the description contained in Gombrowicz's daring masterpieces.

An excellent staging of "The Memoirs of Stefan Czarniecki" in Szczecin. Jacek Bunsch reached for a youthful piece by Gombrowicz, which turned out to be a very current story today.
(...) The performance is a concert of acting. (...) The fact that this well-tuned acting quartet did not give out a false tone is a great merit of Jacek Bunsch - a director who has repeatedly proved that in theater, especially in the plays by Gombrowicz, Witkacy or Mrożek, he has an absolute hearing.
Jan Bończa-Szabłowski, "Rzeczpospolita", 29 December 2015

The performance consists of two stories, the title one and "On the kitchen stairs". (...) The protagonist of "Pamiętnik ..." is the son of a nobleman who adheres to national and religious values, and in fact - a model of xenophobia and hatred, and a wealthy Jewish woman who converted to Catholicism - while falling into devotion and hating the world, just like her husband - a young man who is unable to cope with this confusing heritage. "On the stairs ..." is the story of a Ministry of Foreign Affairs official, whose life position and diplomatic profession do not match the hidden - at least risky uncovered desires - or more precisely: by train to women of low status, servants.
(...) Jacek Bunsch made the story of the two texts so coherent that it can be viewed as one narrative. Forming into a biography - from childhood through youth to male age - a Pole lost in his identity, an intellectual, and also a "respectable" citizen, for whom the House is the main point of reference.
