Ivona, Princess of Burgundia

Witold Gombrowicz

Ivona, Princess of Burgundia
DESCRIPTION

The heir to the throne, Prince Philip, despite the conventions, decides to marry Iwona, a girl of little interest, silence and quite sluggish. His choice, driven by a whim, meets the resistance of the entire court and determines a series of unforeseen situations. Iwona evokes remorse, hatred and aggression. Its very existence provokes more and more stupid, shameful behavior, bringing to light and exposing human weaknesses.
The bitter humor of Gombrowicz, a tasteful visual layer by Agata Duda-Gracz, live music by Maja Kleszcz and Wojciech Krzak, and an excellent cast.

From press reviews:

Each of my theatrical trips outside Warsaw ends with an interesting artistic experience. It was no different in the case of the premiere at the Teatr im. Stefan Jaracz in Łódź. Agata Duda-Gracz was invited to her version of Gombrowicz's "Iwona". The director herself announced that the play was created out of her private need to face the greatest Polish playwright for her. And Yvonne was supposed to be a princess exposing the limits of hypocrisy, whose every gesture, reaction or lack thereof rises to the rank of a symbol.
Duda-Gracz did not make any abbreviations in the text, she focused on interpretation and rhythm. And the one, knocked out efficiently thanks to the music of Maja Kleszcz (Elvis Artist Celebrating) and Wojciech Krzak (Walenty) with the director's sung texts, that Gombrowicz took on a different, even more expressive form. The use of dance and walking motifs, ritual gestures carefully composed against the background of ascetic scenery, drawn with light, resulted in a very theatrical, sometimes even mystical, effect. There is nothing to improve Gombrowicz, but you can and should season him in your own way. And that was what Agata Duda-Gracz did. Her texts and costumes (men who also play the role of court ladies in shirts or even sleeves revealing their torsos) are a clear seal of her creative personality. The rest belongs to Gombrowicz. And to two outstanding actors, Król-Ireneusz Czop and Chamberlain - Mariusz Jakus.
(...) In a word - I encourage you to visit Łódź!
Magdalena Kuydowicz, "The Mirror", January 28, 2014

The power of Witold Gombrowicz's tragedy "Iwona, princess of Burgundy" is effectively revealed by Agata Duda-Gracz.
(...) The producer plays out everything on an empty stage with a platform that cuts into the audience. The character gallery reveals its face. Instead of Gombrowicz's Aunts, Mum (the most convincing Katarzyna Cynke) shakes herself over her sluggish daughter. The royal (literally and figuratively) duo was created by Milena Lisiecka and Ireneusz Czop. The cunning and grotesque Chamberlain (dynamic and ironic Mariusz Jakus) browses and peers at the court ranks. Prince Philip is suspended between rebellion and reflection on his own decision. Krzysztof Wach (recognition) has a celebrity at ease and a caricatured Shakespearean fear of his own abilities and the absurdity of events.
(...) Iwona leads through this land of swirling nonsense resembling a zoo, and in this role Iwona Dróżdż-Rybińska. It is her presence that creates attitudes and fears. He screams only once. Maybe it's all just her dream? The presence of the singing Maja Kleszcz in feathers, shining with sequins and accompanying Wojciech Krzak (both authors of the music) lifts fears and emphasizes the grotesque character.
Agata Duda-Gracz looks for a way to Gombrowicz's phrases in vivid pictures (she is creating spectacular costumes). He amuses and irritates with his "reading". It makes an impression.
