DESCRIPTION

Witold Gombrowicz-inspired Opehetta is a theatre performance by Piotr Kondrat. Witold Gombrowicz himself begins the show by introducing some fragments of the final act of his Operetta, where the revolutionary Hufnagel, galloping around on the back of a Professor of Marxism, judges fascists and bourgeoisie. This is in fact a court out of court, like in any revolution. In the second part of the production, Professor Gombrowicz discusses the work that has just been performed and moves on to the ‘current’ situation in Poland and Europe. The ‘current’ sounds odd, especially as the author has been dead for more than 50 years, but his comments seem worryingly topical. Gombrowicz himself sorts out the ‘anti-Polish’ mug he has been labelled with, demonstrating how close The Transatlantic is to Mickiewicz’s Pan Tadeusz. Gombrowicz, like ourselves, is ‘dead tired with that big contemporary mug: the fools’ idiocy, the immaturity of the immature, the meanness of the mean’. That’s the way he puts it. Opehetta shows also how theatrical this author is, a master not only of the word, but of the theatrical form, too.
