XVI MFG Iwona, księżniczka Burgunda - Teatr Powszechny im. Jana Kochanowskiego, Radom
The existing order is rotting, the monarchy is rotting, spoiling (most likely from excess, but that's not its only sin), even nature is dying out. And that's when Ivona appears - silent, incongruous, undefined....
One day during the obligatory walk on the national holiday, Prince Philip finds an abandoned newspaper, and in it a horoscope:
“The hours from 7 o'clock to 9 o'clock in the evening bring a great expansion of vital forces, a multiplication of personalities, excellent yet risky ideas. These are hours conducive to bold plans, great ventures...”.
These words mark the reality of “Yvonne, Princess of Burgundy” almost like the prophecy of the witches of Shakespeare's “Macbeth.” Something that could have been a farce grows and almost imperceptibly turns to tragedy. Moments later, Ivona enters the stage - the dramatic events can no longer be stopped.
Why?
The existing order is rotting, the monarchy is rotting, spoiling (most likely from excess, but this is not its only sin), even nature is dying out. This state of affairs can no longer last, a breakthrough is needed, although no one is aware of it yet. What's more - it's not entirely clear what it should consist of at all. And that's when Ivona appears - silent, incongruous, undefined... However, she has enough strength (in the face of a weak court) to bring to the surface everything that is shameful and hidden. A barely sensed crisis becomes an actual crisis. But history, which likes to repeat itself (“it's like this over and over again”), hints at already proven solutions. Humanity, its condition has always recovered from disasters and wars. It's these brief moments in which we become better. And since no catastrophe is momentarily happening and war is not yet knocking at the gates of the kingdom, a single death is enough. One humble corpse. This is what the raison d'etat demands.
Subsidized by funds from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Fund for Promotion of Culture and the Municipality of Radom.
The play takes part in the X Competition for the Staging of Old Works of Polish and European Literature “Classics Alive”.
